Jobs as Automation engineer
Automation engineers get plants running. They program PLCs, configure drives and field devices, build HMI visualisations and oversee commissioning – often at the customer’s site, often under time pressure, and not infrequently abroad. In Switzerland this path leads particularly often into pharmaceutical and medical technology production, packaging and filling technology, and machine tool manufacturing. Day-to-day work begins with the requirements specification and ends with acceptance. In between come program structure, safety functions, interfaces to higher-level systems and the documentation handed over at the end. In regulated plants qualification is added: what is not documented is considered not done. Common are Siemens TIA Portal and S7, Beckhoff TwinCAT, Rockwell, B&R and ABB, along with control systems such as WinCC, PCS 7 or DeltaV and the standards IEC 61131-3 and IEC 61508. A meaningful criterion is how many commissioning projects someone has actually seen through. Through try&hire you watch a video profile, hold a thirty-minute introductory meeting and then work together. The engineers are employed via staff leasing; salary and insurance run through us. After three to six months, both sides decide on a permanent position. During this time you see whether someone can cleanly take over an existing program.
