Jobs as Process engineer

Process engineers design what happens in pipes, vessels and columns. They calculate mass and energy balances, size equipment, select pumps and heat exchangers and then commission the plant. In Switzerland this often leads into pharmaceutical and fine chemicals production, food technology and water treatment. Day-to-day work moves between the desk and the plant. It starts with flow diagrams, design calculations and specifications, followed by coordination with suppliers, installation support and commissioning, and finally the fine-tuning of yields, cycle times and energy consumption. Experienced engineers plan for the restart: a plant will stop at some point, and how quickly it comes back is decided at the design stage. Common are simulation tools such as Aspen, design calculations for heat transfer and hydraulics, knowledge of cleanroom and hygienic design, and safety studies such as HAZOP.
