Medical technology engineers develop products in which a fault affects a human being. Accordingly, a large share of the work is evidence: risk management, verification, validation, clinical evaluation and technical documentation that still has to hold up years later. In Switzerland the industry is strong and export-oriented, and since the change in the relationship with European regulation, market access itself has become an engineering topic. Day-to-day work combines development and regulatory affairs. A design decision entails a risk assessment, a change entails an evaluation, and suppliers have to be qualified. People who are good here keep both together instead of putting the documentation off until later. Common are ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 62304 for software, usability to IEC 62366, experience with notified bodies and with transitioning existing products to new requirements.
